27/8/2015 – A thinking of History, A stretch of Health and Fitness, A mapping of Geography!

I’ve been thinking a lot about One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest because it is the film we are studying here in my Y12 English class. Especially the scene where Nurse Ratched tells McMurphy that his “hand is staining (her) glass.”

I like the idea that the people who push the envelope, the McMurphy’s of the world, are constantly ‘staining the glass’ of society and our institutions. If the internet had character it would be a lot more McMurphy, and a lot less Nurse Ratched. To extend the metaphor even further, I hope you find some sites today that ‘break the glass’ like McMurphy went on to do as he punched through the window and grabbed the cigarettes for good ol’ Charlie Cheswick. 🙂

1.History! I couldn’t get more than 9 but I liked this…..you get 3 lives, and at the end it shows you dates and where you went wrong. If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times – I gotta brush up on my Chinese dynasties!

2. Health and Fitness and many other categories…

Do you notice that in the map for this site they have left off the United Kingdom? As someone from New Zealand I am completely used to this phenomena but it was surprising to see it happen to someone else for a change! This site has information and videos on all sorts of record attempts…..maybe you, or your students, can set one of your own?

3. Geography….if you love Geography, (as I am sure a small proportion of people do) and can tell your mercator from your elbow, then this is the site for you!

Bonus site…….We are getting into the world of Coding here and this popped up as an interesting site that allows you to learn coding ‘stuff’ in a fun way. You have to download software so I include it as an optional extra….

Hi people, I have many thanks to give to Sheree Ineson from Southland Girls’ High School for sharing some of these amazing links.

1. For all subjects this site is incredibly interesting. Where do punctuation marks get their unusual names? What were the 20 key events of WW2? Heaps of really interesting topics presented in a multi-media format.  I could browse this site for hours!

2. I’ll take ‘Quiz Games’ for $400, thanks. I’m always looking for ways to make the rote learning of information a little more fun and this site fits the bill.

Example: A TV quiz game featuring clues in the form of answers.

Ummmmmm…….What is Jeopardy?

3. Yahtzee Croshaw once said “Jump scares are to horror as fart jokes are to comedy.” However, I will require intensive psychoanalysis after viewing the top jumpscares! Media Studies or Senior English Film students are bound to get an adrenalin kick out of these….

A dabble of English, a boggle of Physics, a tweaking of Art.

1. English.

Thanks to HB teaching colleague Amy for this comic. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling

It’s funny AND helpful. Warning though…a lot of the stuff on theoatmeal.com uses pretty salty adult language! Preview before you print anything for class use!

More English…

This could be a really interesting writing folio idea. Get the students to create a new word and do a written piece explaining the emotion that word expresses. To be fair, these made me sad.

My new favourite word.

2. Physics. My brain hurts after reading, but hey, who needs a University edumacation when you have a site like this?

Things like these always make me aware of how much I don’t even know I don’t know. I know a lot of things I don’t know, that is to say, I know the names of many things without knowing what they really are, and I know the names of some things, knowing what they are but not how they work. In related news, there is just so much that I am completely unaware of.

3. Art. I uploaded a pic of McMurphy and ran it through this very cool site, tweaking the psychedelics until I had a picture that I am sure Ken Kesey would have been proud of, if only he would focus! Art students will love the ability to get creative with pictures….

6/8/2015 – week 3 already?

Morning all, well it’s been a frenetic but exciting start to the term. On friday we had a meeting of the Hawkes Bay SCT cluster group and that is always a good motivator to get engaged with educational issues! Many thanks to Rachel for hosting the meeting and Adie for both taking minutes and providing ongoing encouragement.

Onto the three things for today! I have a real mixed bag of treats on offer….

1. This cool History website has tons of goodies….for instance I took the “Which historic badass were you in a past life” quiz and turns out I would have been Boudica/Boadicea! Nice. (pic not related…that ain’t Boudica)

I reverse google image searched this and found out it’s Ching Shih, who was Chinese, and one of the most badass pirates of all time.

2. Design. Ok, so this site is definitely for the fatcats and not the poor students….no option to throw a mattress on the floor here. But, it’s still a fun site to mess about on.

3. PE? Health? Quite frankly, my reaction time was a bit rubbish. In fact, today I learned I have the reaction time of Theodore Roosevelt. ie, a dead man. I’m gonna have a cup of coffee or three and try again…..But on the plus side my memory was scintillating. 🙂

And finally, I know it’s technically a 4th thing, but I don’t think many people will be interested in this….however, if you are Warren and you scrolled down this far….here’s an extra nugget of Beatles gold just for you…
